Did you know that Galveston is home to more than 50 firsts in Texas?

Galveston Island has an interesting history and is the site of many Texas’ firsts. Here are a few of these Texas' firsts.
 
  1. First customs house (1825)
  2. First post office (1836)
  3. First military company, now the Galveston Artillery Club (1841)
  4. First cotton compress (1842)
  5. First law firm west of the Mississippi River (1846)
  6. First insurance company (1854)
  7. First use of telegraph to send news dispatches (1854)
  8. First private bank (1854)
  9. First gas lights (1856)
  10. First real estate firm (1857)
  11. First opera house (1870)
  12. First cotton exchange (1872)
  13. First telephone (1878)
  14. First building built expressly for a newspaper (1884)
  15. First black high school (1885)
  16. First medical college (1886)
  17. First school for nurses (1894)
  18. First golf course (1898)
  19. First country club (1898)
  20. First ship through Panama Canal comes from Galveston (1913)
