One of the more popular free events in Galveston is ArtWalk. ArtWalk is scheduled approximately every six to eight weeks and is an opening night for the work of local and regional artists. Art galleries and other venues host opening night receptions for a wide array of art ranging from jewelry to watercolors to sculptures. ArtWalk is always on a Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. and is coordinated by the Galveston Arts Center.
Art enthusiasts can browse just a few galleries or try to make stops to all participating venues which can reach upwards of close to 30 stops during some events. The Tremont House, 2300 Mechanic, always hosts an exhibit in support of this free event as does The Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice. You’ll also want to stop in at the Galveston Arts Center, 2501 Market. Most galleries are located on Postoffice Street but you will also find a few on Market. Pick up a map at one of the stops or visit the Galveston Arts Center website at www.contemporaryartgalveston.org
Upcoming ArtWalk dates are January 19, March 9, April 20 and June 1, 2013.
During the January 19 ArtWalk, The Tremont House is hosting Robb Kendrick: The Cowboy Spirit to tie in with the western theme for The Tremont House “Waltz Across Texas” Ball on Saturday, February 9. Entertainment includes rockabilly favorite Jesse Dayton and Grammy Award Winner Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel. For tickets, visit www.Galveston.com/MardiGrasBall
