Thanksgiving Weekend is a great excuse for an extended getaway to Galveston. There's plenty of holiday events to keep you busy or just take time to relax before the holiday bustle begins.
Wednesday - Leave work a little early and check in at one of Galveston's popular historic hotels. Hotel Galvez & Spa is located on Galveston's beachfront while The Tremont House is in the heart of The Strand Historic District. Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21 is walkable to The Strand and overlooks the harbor. Check-in is at 4 p.m. unless you request and earlier time.
Thanksgiving - Make a reservation for Thanksgiving Day Brunch at Hotel Galvez. This is a hugely popular brunch so make your reservation as soon as you book your room. Seating times begin at 10:30 a.m. and continue through 6:30 p.m. After 3:30 p.m. the menu changes from brunch to more of a dinner menu. For reservations, please call 409.515.2161. You will love it! Brunch at Hotel Galvez has been perfected to a science as they serve brunch every Sunday.
Thursday Evening - Venture out to Moody Gardens for Ice Land and Festival of Lights. While you tour "Ice Land" you'll see amazing carved ice scultpures in a huge exhibit. They even provide a parka to keep you warm. Then explore the largest holiday lighting festival on the Gulf Coast.
Friday Day - This is the perfect time to avoid the Black Friday crowds and leisurely browse the shops in The Strand District and nearby Postoffice Street.
Friday Evening - If you are a guest at The Tremont House and Harbor House, check on the shuttle schedule and catch a ride to Hotel Galvez. Hotel Galvez is host to the Galveston Holiday Lighting Celebration on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus and the lighting of the hotel's 35-ft Christmas Tree. Enjoy holiday music by area carolers and a performance by Galveston Ballet. Performances should wrap up by 7:30 or 8 p.m. so make sure you make a dinner reservation.
Saturday Day - If you are a fan of Jaston Williams of a Greater Tuna series, buy tickets for "Maid Marion in a Stolen Car" at The Grand 1894 Opera House. The matinee performance begins at 2 p.m. For tickets, visit www.thegrand.com.
Saturday Evening - One of the most popular events during Thanksgiving Weekend is ArtWalk. Typically more than 20 galleries or other businesses host art exhibitions from 6 to 9 p.m. during this holiday ArtWalk. The Tremont House is always host to a regional artist so stop in and visit. Plus, weather permitting, the hotel's Rooftop Bar may be open. Or, enjoy live jazz in the Toujouse Bar.
Sunday Evening - To end the weekend on a high note, The Grand 1894 Opera House will feature "The Irish Tenors" on Sunday at 7 p.m. The Irish Tenors, Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Ronan Tynan, will perform Christmas favorites from their best-selling We Three Kings album.
