Gracing the coast of the Gulf of Mexico since 1911 is the renowned “Queen of the Gulf,” the Hotel Galvez & Spa®, a Wyndham Grand® Hotel and National Trust Historic Hotel of America. Following the 1900 Hurricane that devastated Galveston Island, prominent Galveston businessmen raised $1 million to construct the hotel as a symbol of recovery. Several multi-million dollar renovation projects by the current owners have returned the Galvez to its rightful place as “Queen of the Gulf Coast.” Hotel Galvez is the only historic beachfront hotel on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Hotel Galvez Shares History Via Audio Tour and Hall of History

Hotel Galvez is the only historic beachfront hotel on the Texas Gulf Coast. Its longevity lends itself to an interesting history. In celebration of this history, the hotel recently released a free multimedia tour app for iPhone and Android smartphones. The free Hotel Galvez app provides a 25-minute history tour and a 20-minute ghost tour with scrollable images, numeric keypad entry and a keyword search function. The tour was produced by Acoustiguide Inc. (Espro Acoustiguide Group) which also produced the audio tour at Galveston’s popular Bishop’s Palace and the Tall Ship Elissa which are operated by the Galveston Historical Foundation.

In addition to the new audio tours, the hotel offers a Hall of History located in the lower level of the hotel. The Hall of History is a permanent exhibit, which is open to the public, that offers a history on the hotel and Galveston as well as a display featuring various items related to the hotel’s history.

Hotel Galvez Opens New Galvez Bar and Grill

Hotel Galvez & Spa completed a $900,000 renovation to its lobby, restaurant and bar in May 2013 and opened its newly branded Galvez Bar & Grill. While the hotel’s wicker furniture in the east and west promenade remains intact, the lobby is updated with new flooring, furniture and lighting. The hotel’s restaurant boasts a new look and new menu for guests. Galvez Bar & Grill features fresh local Gulf seafood from Pier 19 and Texas regional cuisine as well as an extensive bar bites menu featuring sliders, flatbreads and Campenchana (Mexican seafood cocktail). As part of this renovation, the hotel has also expanded its popular bar which has its own fascinating history. The bar, which is not original to the hotel, was purchased by hotel owner George Mitchell from the Old Galveston Club, which was known as Galveston’s last speakeasy. In addition to this spring renovation, hotel owner George Mitchell and the Mitchell family completed an $11 million guest room renovation for the 2011 Centennial. The owners replaced the Gulf facing windows throughout the hotel with divided light windows reminiscent of the hotel’s original design and updated all the guest rooms and suites. Additionally, the hotel added a new 9,328 sq. ft. outdoor green space called Centennial Green, which is available to special events and wedding ceremonies. Link to release.
