Texas’ only historic beachfront hotel - Hotel Galvez & Spa®, A Wyndham Grand® Hotel and Historic Hotels of America member - will celebrate its 105th anniversary on Friday, June 10, 2016.
The hotel invites the public to celebrate its 105th anniversary on June 10 with complimentary cake in the lobby from 4 to 6 p.m. and guided history tours of the hotel at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Galvez Bar & Grill will offer a discount on Ghost Bride cocktail, created in honor of the hotel’s most well-known ghost.
Hotel Galvez opened on June 10, 1911, and was immediately proclaimed “Queen of the Gulf.” When the hotel opened, it had 275 guest rooms with a room rate starting at $2 per day. The hotel boasted modern, time-saving tools such as a potato peeling machine, an ice-maker, a dishwasher and an ice cream maker. The hotel also touted having a concrete wine cellar, a printing press, and a company that made roller chairs. Within a year of opening, it was deemed the “best arranged and most richly furnished seaside hotel in America” by Hotel Monthly.
“Those visiting Hotel Galvez & Spa during this exciting weekend will enjoy the expanded bar and restaurant and a very unique view of our Hall of History on our 105th anniversary,” said General Manager Steve Cunningham. “We encourage anyone to come visit and celebrate with us, and invite guests to spend the weekend with us to enjoy the hotel, maybe renew their wedding vows and sip on one of our Ghost Bride cocktails.”
The public is always invited to browse the hotel’s Hall of History on the lower level, a permanent exhibit at the hotel.
The anniversary celebration leads into the hotel’s annual Wedding Vow Renewal on Saturday, June 11. Couples are invited to renew their commitment to each other during a group ceremony scheduled at 10 a.m. on hotel grounds and officiated by Justice of the Peace Jim Schweitzer. Following the ceremony, a small reception is hosted by the hotel. Couples have the option to book the Wedding Vow Renewal Package or join in the ceremony at no cost. Advance reservations are required.
The Hotel Galvez Wedding Vow Renewal package, which includes participation in the wedding vow renewal ceremony on Saturday morning and reception for participating couples, as well as a room for two, champagne accompanied by chocolate covered strawberries upon arrival and rose petals on the bed as part of the hotel’s turndown service is offered as a one night package starting at $359 per night or Friday and Saturday package. Advance reservations are required for both. For reservations, call (409) 765-7721 or visit www.HotelGalvez.com and click on “Special Offers.”
