Spring and summer on Galveston Island means that it’s time for free outdoor movies and live music in downtown Galveston. Galveston’s historic downtown district is gearing up for its annual and free monthly events held at Saengerfest Park, 23rd and Strand. The popular Movie Nite on the Strand resumes in April and is scheduled on the first Saturday of the month through October. Movie goers are encouraged to bring their own chairs and grab dinner as they enjoy these free outdoor movies. Music Nite on The Strand resumed in March and continues through October.
Upcoming movies include “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” on April 2; “Rudy” on May 7; “The Breakfast Club” on June 4; “Ocean’s 11” on July 2; “Mama Mia” on Aug. 6; “The Sting” on Sept. 3; and “The Birds” on Oct. 1. Movie Nite is sponsored by the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau, Mitchell Historic Properties and the Historic Downtown Strand Seaport Partnership.
Visitors to downtown Galveston can also enjoy live music during the monthly Music Nite on The Strand scheduled on the second Saturday of the month from 5 to 8 p.m. at Saengerfest Park. Upcoming groups include The Convertibles (classic rock) on April 9; Liz Talley & TNT (country) on May 14; The Zydeco Dots on June 11; Irie Time (reggae) on July 9; Janet Z (blues) on Aug. 13; Silverado (country) on Sept. 10; and The Convertibles (classic rock) on Oct. 8. Music Nite continues through October and is sponsored by the Galveston Island CVB and Mitchell Historic Properties.
The Historic Downtown Strand Seaport Partnership re-launched Market on The Strand in 2010. This outdoor market is scheduled on the third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Saengerfest Park. Market on The Strand added special Jewelry Saturdays on March 26, June 25 and Oct. 1. Also every Sunday, The Lunchbox Café, 213 23rd Street, hosts a Farm Box Market from noon to 3 p.m. featuring local farm fresh produce, yard eggs, pasture raised beef, goat cheese and freshly made bread and desserts.
