The Strand's shops, ravaged three years ago by Hurricane Ike, are now filled with holiday shoppers, and after a record summer for tourism, Galveston anticipates a busy spring break featuring new attractions and restaurants that capitalize on history, nature and, of course, the treasures of the Gulf of Mexico. Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches is opening a location in downtown Galveston. A Jimmy John’s franchise will lease property from Mitchell Historic Properties (MHP) at 102 22nd Street near Harborside Drive and adjacent to Starbucks. MHP has agreed to build a 1,600 sq. ft. shop in a portion of the parking lot.

Y’ARRR sure to enjoy Galveston’s newest family attraction – Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast. Visitors can now see pirates as well as ghosts in historic downtown Galveston with the grand opening of Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast on Friday, Jan. 27. Pirates! adjoins Galveston’s year-round Haunted Mayfield Manor which opened in September. Both attractions, owned by Joyce McLean, are adjacent to Saengerfest Park, 2302 Strand, and are tenants of Mitchell Historic Properties.

Movers and shakers: The Galveston Chamber of Commerce plans a March move to the first floor of the 1873 Washington Building, 2228 Mechanic St., in the island’s downtown.
Mitchell Historic Properties owns the building, formerly occupied by New York Dress Outlet, which did not return after Hurricane Ike struck in 2008. Along with housing staff, the 4,000-square-foot space also will serve as a visitor center and offer a conference room for meetings and small business seminars.
