“I love my trade because I’m preserving history,” says Hunt. “To think that this building survived the 1900 Storm, Hurricane Ike and other disasters is just amazing.”

According to “Galveston’s Architecture Guidebook,” the Hutchings-Sealy Building was built by John H. Hutchings and George Sealy for their Ball, Hutchings & Co. which was later reorganized as Hutchings, Sealy & Co. The building actually consists of two adjoining structures made to look like one. The corner building with “Hutchings” housed a bank while the adjoining “Sealy” building was built to house the Sealy offices. The buildings’ terra-cotta-encased steel frame was one of the earliest examples of steel framed construction in Texas.

The Hutchings-Sealy Building is now home to Luigi’s Ristorante Italiano, Karen’s Kloset and Tina’s Gifts & Clothing, as well as offices on the upper floors. The building features a wrought iron and marble antique staircase from the ground floor to the third floor as well as a glass enclosed elevator with views of the common area atrium. The second floor of the building includes a glass block floor extending from the front to the rear of the common area.

“These buildings are a critical part of Galveston’s history and we’re fortunate that the Mitchell family continues to renovate and maintain these unique structures,” says Bill Ross, senior vice president and general manager of Mitchell Historic Properties. “These historic buildings contribute to the character of Galveston’s vibrant downtown and we’re lucky to have them.”

GALVESTON ISLAND, Texas (June 8, 2009) – In 1976 Cynthia and George Mitchell bought the T. Jefferson League Building. This was the first of more than 20 buildings purchased or built by the Mitchells in what had become an abandoned and blighted downtown waterfront. Today, thanks to their efforts and those of the Galveston Historical Foundation, Galveston’s downtown is recognized as a National Historic Landmark District by the National Park Service. Now thirty-two years later, Mitchell Historic Properties (MHP) is again leading the effort to rehabilitate the historic district in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike which struck Galveston on Sept. 13, 2008.

Immediately following Hurricane Ike, MHP launched a massive cleanup and restoration program in downtown Galveston. Construction is now complete in nearly all of its downtown buildings which, in total, encompass approximately one-fourth of the developed buildings in The Strand. Current estimates put the cost of disaster relief, cleanup and building renovation at more than $24 million on more than 20 buildings.

All of the hotels that are part of Mitchell Historic Properties have reopened. Hotel Galvez reopened in October 2008, Harbor House Hotel at Pier 21 reopened in February 2009 and The Tremont House reopened on June 1, 2009. The Spa at the Hotel Galvez will reopen in June 2009.

As of June 5, the following tenants have reopened: Gracie’s, Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 21 Theater, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Starbucks Coffee, Tina’s Gifts and Clothing, The Admiralty Marine Model Gallery and Willie G’s Restaurant. The new Olympia The Grill at Pier 21 opened to the public on June 1 and Luigi’s Ristorante Italiano will reopen on June 11. Fuddruckers, Primitive African Art Gallery, and Santa Fe Trail Indian Jewelry will reopen soon. MHP also expects new tenants Nestlé Toll House Café and Thomas Kinkade Art Gallery as well as some additional tenants to open soon. Overall, including MHP tenants, approximately 75 percent of downtown businesses have reopened.
In addition to its restoration efforts in downtown Galveston, MHP has partnered with Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Historic Downtown Galveston Partnership to resume Movie Nite on The Strand on the first Saturdays of the month (March – October) and added Music Nite on The Strand on the third Saturdays (May – October). Both events are held at Saengerfest Park, 23rd and Strand.
George and Cynthia Mitchell develop Thompson Lofts for downtown Galveston living

GALVESTON ISLAND, Texas (May 5, 2008)—Original heart pine floors, soaring 14-foot wood ceilings, exposed brick, balconies overlooking The Strand and views of Galveston Harbor through the energy-efficient insulated 10-foot windows await future residents of the new Thompson Lofts in the heart of The Historic Downtown Strand District located at 112 Tremont Street (23rd Street).

Thompson Lofts, a project of George and Cynthia Mitchell and Mitchell Historic Properties, are contemporary, yet classic lofts in the 1877 Thompson Building at the corner of 23rd Street and Harborside Drive. The project designer is Tiziana Alessandro Mitchell of The Design Fix in Venice, CA and project architect is Bob Robinowitz of McIntyre + Robinowitz Architects in Houston with Myerson Builders as the general contractor. The Thompson Lofts will feature four one-bedroom and three two-bedroom living options ranging from 700 to 2,287 square feet. Prices range from $206,000 for a one-bedroom to $769,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bath unit and a spacious balcony. The total square footage of the building is 18,835 including 6,500 sq. ft. in retail space on the first floor. The second floor houses seven lofts and common area.

The building was constructed in 1877 by John Wolston, Clinton Wells and Charles Vidor. The first tenant of the building was R.F George, a wholesale druggist. In 1878, George combined his business with T.C. Thompson and JJ Schott to form Thompson, Schott & Co. The building housed wholesales drugstores until the turn of the century. Later it housed a ship chandlery, and retail grocery business. The building changed owners various times over the years and was purchased from Miro Vranac, Jr. by George Mitchell in 1992.

All lofts are equipped with a gourmet kitchen featuring Jenn-Air Kitchen stainless steel appliances including a side-by-side refrigerator, Zephyr stainless steel overhead exhaust hood, a breakfast bar, and CaesarStone quartz countertops with Walker Zanger glass tile backsplash. Custom built Lyptus wood cabinets from certified sustainable forests are featured throughout.

The bathrooms are decorated with Ann Sacks glass ceramic bath tile and a Grohe shower system. Every loft includes eight-foot solid interior doors, Cirrus ceiling fans and a General Electric front load washer and electric dryer. Lofts are pre-wired for data and cable connections, as well as surround sound in the living areas and audio in the bedrooms. The noise of neighbors will not be an issue in these lofts, which were renovated with double walls with acoustical insulation between each living unit and in the hallways.

Each resident will have a secure parking spot in an adjacent gated lot that leads directly into the building and a dedicated secure storage area.

The lofts are surrounded by more than 100 shops, restaurants, and art galleries as well as a wealth of activities in this vibrant part of Galveston Island. Residents are within walking distance of Pier 21, The Grand 1894 Opera House and the nearby Postoffice Arts and Entertainment District.

“Like most of the buildings in The Strand District, the Thompson building has never before been residential. However, now it is reborn with this new function,” says Tiziana Alessandro Mitchell of The Design Fix in Venice, Ca. “In my honest approach to adaptive reuse, my goal was to respect the building's history by boldly expressing the new, while clearly revealing the old. In this way, we achieved a fusion of history and contemporary life.”

Mitchell Historic Properties is a private company responsible for maintenance, sales and leasing of 17 historic buildings owned by developer and philanthropist George P. Mitchell and the Mitchell family. The Mitchells have invested more than $125 million in rehabilitating historic properties in the historic downtown district during the past 31 years, and have developed 55 living quarters, including lofts and apartments, in the downtown area.
