Y’ARRR sure to enjoy Galveston’s newest family attraction – Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast. Visitors can now see pirates as well as ghosts in historic downtown Galveston with the grand opening of Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast on Friday, Jan. 27. Pirates! adjoins Galveston’s year-round Haunted Mayfield Manor which opened in September. Both attractions, owned by Joyce McLean, are adjacent to Saengerfest Park, 2302 Strand, and are tenants of Mitchell Historic Properties.

Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast is a pirate-themed family experience where visitors can learn about the legends, myths and stories of the last buccaneers. The interactive entertainment venue features the deck of a pirate ship, a captain’s cabin and actors portraying the notorious Jean Laffite and his brother Pierre, as well as the life that all pirates led. After Laffite left Louisiana he made Galveston his base of operations from 1817 to 1821. According to pirate folklore, he built a bright red mansion called the “Maison Rouge” which he later burned to the ground along with most of his entire encampment when he was ordered to vacate the island by the United States Navy. It is also said that Laffite interacted with Jane Long who is known as the “mother of Texas” and was in residence on Bolivar peninsula while he occupied Galveston and interaction with the famous Karankawan indian tribe as well as Texas hero Jim Bowie.

“We are trying to tell the story of the life of pirates, how Laffite fit into the legends and give visitors an experience that will be entertaining as well as informative,” says McLean. “We will have live actors playing the parts of pirates on staff to heighten that experience, for visitors of all ages.

Pirates! and Manor offer a gift shop with pirate and ghost themed books, costumes, toys and games as well as paranormal equipment. According to McLean, there have been paranormal investigations in the building and more are planned.

“These family friendly attractions provide a well-rounded entertainment experience for our visitors and enhance downtown Galveston,” says Bill Ross, senior vice-president and general manager of Mitchell Historic Properties. “Families can do a little shopping, enjoy and meal and, now, learn about pirates or tour a haunted house.”

Playing off the fears of others is not only entertaining for some but for Leonard Pickle it’s his career.
In his sophomore year of college at Texas A & M University Leonard produced his first commercial haunted house. With a budget of $300 and a $0.50 per person admission price, the operation grossed over $1,000. His passion for scaring people was ignited. Leonard has become one of the most sought after Haunt designers and consultants in the country having designed over 100 original and creative Haunted Attraction designs for major venues including Madison Square Garden, Universal Studios Florida, Six Flags, Paramount’s Kings Island, Kentucky Kingdom, and SCREAMS Terror Park. Over 1 million people from Los Angeles to New York, Orlando to Seattle, have experienced the “Pickel Theory of Fright” firsthand. Pickel also designed and oversaw the construction of Haunted Mayfield Manor which recently opened on the Strand in Galveston, Texas.

Each year Pickel travels the world researching the field of dark amusements both past and present. Leonard applied his expertise toward a summer seasonal haunted house in 1993, with Mayhem Manor® in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which provided Pickel a hands-on testing facility for new fright concepts. In 1994, Leonard co-founded Haunted Attraction Magazine, the premier publication for the dark amusement industry, striving to provide information vital to the success of the industry, with in-depth articles on the country’s major attractions. In 2004, Leonard launched the Haunted Attraction National Tradeshow and Convention the first national convention devoted solely to the Haunted Attraction Industry, designed for Haunters by Haunters.

Mr. Pickle is an accomplished speaker and is often asked to present his seminar “Getting Started in the Haunted Attraction Industry,” a full day workshop covering the ins and outs of operating your first Haunted Attraction. Leonard was awarded a life time achievement award from the International Association of Haunted Attractions and was honored with a question using his name in the Millennium Edition of Trivial Pursuit. He was also appeared as an industry expert in several television programs including the Travel Channel special about Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida, and America’s Best Haunted Houses.

The legendary Martha Stewart Halloween Special will air October 24th on the Hallmark Channel (*check your local listings for times) and the featured guest is Leonard Pickel the ‘Godfather of the Haunted House Industry’. Mr. Pickel, owner of Hauntrepreneurs® a design and consulting firm, has taken great pleasure in horrifying crowds from coast to coast for over thirty years. This passion and knowledge has earned him the title – ‘Godfather of Haunt’.

Following The 1900 Storm, which still stands as the deadliest natural disaster in United States history, thousands of bodies were stored in numerous buildings in Galveston’s downtown. This designation has resulted in Galveston being cited by ghost hunters as one of the most haunted cities in America. Now, in addition to the island’s popular ghost tours, visitors can enjoy a new permanent haunted house – Haunted Mayfield Manor which opens tonight at 6 p.m.

Haunted Mayfield Manor is housed in the 1885 Butterowe Building, located off Saengerfest Park (23rd and Strand). This twelve-room haunted mansion is themed around the fictional Dr. Horace Mayfield who supervised the operation of one of the morgues following the 1900 Storm. While the story is fictitious, bodies of the dead were stored for identification in the Butterowe Building. Celebrity haunted house creator Leonard Pickel was involved in the design of Haunted Mayfield Manor and will be on site for the opening weekend on Friday from 6 to 11:30 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 11:30 p.m. Pickel has done work for Universal Studios, the Playboy Mansion and, most recently, Martha Stewart.

Owner Joyce McLean describes the experience as a “psychological theatrical haunt that involves the lost bride of Dr. Mayfield portrayed by actors, mechanical props and pneumatic animations.” The cost for regular admission is $10 per person while a VIP ticket is available for $15. The VIP ticket puts guests at the front of the line. Regular operating hours for Haunted Mayfield Manor are Fridays from 3 to 11:30 p.m.; Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; Sundays from 1 to 9 p.m.; and Tuesdays through Thursdays from 5 to 10 p.m. For more information, visit www.hauntedmayfieldmanor.com or call (409) 762-6677.

A second attraction called Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast is scheduled to open in early November in the same building as Haunted Mayfield Manor. Both attractions are new tenants of Mitchell Historic Properties (MHP). MHP oversees Galveston properties owned by George Mitchell and the Mitchell family, including its commercial and residential properties located downtown.
Gracie’s offers a fun family shopping experience to both visitors and locals to Galveston Island. Specializing in gifts, home accents and accessories, Gracie’s carries several lines including Vera Bradley bags and Waxing Poetic jewelry. They also have an extensive children’s department which includes toys, books and accessories, including the Groovy Girls line.

Owners Keith and Genette Bassett have operated Gracie’s on The Strand for 20 years. As third generation Galvestonians and long-time business owners, they never questioned rebuilding after Hurricane Ike devastated the island. “I love Galveston,” said Genette, “I like the sense of community. And that was never more obvious than after Ike when everyone pulled together.”

With a great selection of items for anyone in the family, Gracie’s offers daily specials, which are posted on their Facebook page, and special events throughout the year that coincide with major downtown events like Dickens on The Strand. “I like to say that we’re the first to open and the last to close on The Strand. We’re very tourist driven but we cater to locals, as well. If there are people out wanting to shop, we’re open,” says Genette.

When asked about operating a business in downtown Galveston, Genette answered, “I think the best thing about The Strand is there is always an event going on. It seems like every weekend there’s something being held in Saengerfest Park or downtown. There’s always an event going on which makes it nice for locals and tourists, as well. I think there are some great opportunities for businesses in Galveston. ”

Gracie’s is located at 2228 Strand in historic downtown Galveston, just across from Saengerfest Park. Gracie’s is open Sundays through Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Shoppers can now enjoy a new retailer - The Jewel Garden on The Strand National Historic Landmark District in historic downtown Galveston. The Jewel Garden, owned by the Yeatman family, opened in July. The shop carries unique gifts, décor and, as the name suggests, a broad range of jewelry including sterling silver with amber and turquoise accents, rhodium jewelry, glass and handmade jewelry that showcase the talents of designers such as Angie Olami, Holly Yashi, Desert Heart and Ayala Bar.

The shop is the exclusive retailer for Ayala Bar, which is designed by an Israeli artist who uses vintage fabrics and Swarovski crystals in handmade jewelry.

The Jewel Garden is one of only seven stores in Texas to carry Holly Yashi jewelry. From California, Holly Yashi has been creating jewelry since 1981 and her beautiful jewelry expresses her passion for bold colors and timeless elegance.

Angie Olami jewelry utilizes silver, gemstones, crystals and ancient roman glass. And Texas-based Desert Heart uses a desert influence and unusual components to create an exceptionally versatile line of jewelry.

The Jewel Garden also carries a nice selection of rhodium jewelry that is a popular choice for shoppers because it is nickel and lead-free, hypoallergenic and does not tarnish.

In addition to the jewelry, The Jewel Garden has a vast variety of gift items and home décor such as metal wall art, Cloisonné ornaments, pet-themed planters and unique wine caddies.

The Jewel Garden is located at 2326 Strand. The Jewel Garden is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Yeatman family also operates Santa Fe Trails, 2311 Strand, which specializes in Native American and Southwest jewelry and art. The Jewel Garden is a tenant of Mitchell Historic Properties.

Head to Footsies will dress you from head to toe

Head to Footsies is a Galveston favorite for women specializing in shoes, as well as clothing and accessories. After the original Footsies location was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008, co-owner, Joyce McLean, decided to reopen on her own. This time, McLean decided to expand to a place where “literally we can dress ‘Head to Footsies’ a teenage girl and her great grandmother.”

Head to Footsies offers a unique shopping experience to downtown Galveston visitors. They change their inventory based on the seasons and keep customers in mind. “We are flexible with our inventory but always maintain great quality at affordable prices. We are always looking for unique boutique items not sold in mall or discount stores,” says McLean.

With repeat clients and the economy in mind, Head to Footsies offers a number of promotional sales and coupons throughout the year. Additionally, the store features a Frequent Buyers Club. All customers who spend more than $500 in merchandise will receive 5% off future purchases for life.

Head to Footsies offers “Fabulous fashions, sizes extra-small to double extra-large—equally cherished,” says McLean. Fashions include resort, casual and career separates as well as cocktail/evening dresses. This boutique carries many clothing lines including Fresh Produce, Monoreno, Blue Bird, Miss Me Jeans, Russ Barron, Grace in L.A., Escapada and Elan.

The boutique also carries several different lines of shoes and accessories including Italian Shoemakers, Steve Madden, Dr. Scholls, Sketchers, Not Rated, Madeline Stuart, Yellow Box, Vaneli, and Taos Footwear. Head to Footsies also carries a limited selection of men’s shoes including Docker’s and Kenneth Cole for Men.

When asked about opening a new business in Galveston, McLean advised, “Do your market research, then do it again. Know who your customer will be and don’t make assumptions based on perception. Know the facts and give the level of service your customers expect. Be original, stick with a theme and keep your scope focused. Expect long days, hard work and the rewards of making new friends and learning to expect the unexpected. Get involved in your community; give back, even if it means you don’t receive rewards right away.”

Head to Footsies is located at 2211 Strand, a part of Old Galveston Square in historic downtown Galveston. Head to Footsies is open Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Did you know that in 1836, Texans used a route named El Camino Real de los Tejas (The Royal Road of Texas) to flee from Santa Anna in the Runaway Scrape? A free public exhibit that explores Spain’s and Mexico’s involvement with Texas and its connection to this 2,500-mile historic trail will be on display Saturday, Aug. 27 through Monday, Sept. 5 (Labor Day) in Old Galveston Square, 2211 Strand. “El Camino Real de los Tejas: Past & Present,” created by the Consulate General of Spain in Houston, features panels with old maps and engraving reproductions, photographs and other historical documents. The trail is one of eleven designated historic trails in the country.

The Spanish Consulate exhibition will be accompanied by “Photographs of El Camino Real de los Tejas” by Photographer Christopher Talbot, an associate professor at the Stephen F. Austin University School of Art. This photography exhibit features a portion of Talbot’s traveling exhibit which is going to various sites along the historic trail and is a visual documentation of Camino Real. His photos have captured outstanding images of trail swales, acequias, river crossings, forts, missions, presidios, and other original remnants along the old route.

The display will open in conjunction with ArtWalk on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m. Following ArtWalk, it will be open daily from Sunday, Aug. 28 through Monday, Sept. 5 from 2 to 6 p.m. A seminar about El Camino Real de los Tejas will be held on Friday, Sept. 2 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Several experts will talk about the significance of the route and answer questions from the public. The event will also be attended by the new Spanish Consul General Cristobal Valdés.

El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail was designated by the U.S. Congress in 2004 to commemorate significant historic routes extending from the international border at the Rio Grande to the easternmost section of the Spanish province of Texas in Natchitoches Parish, La.

The trail long pre-dates the establishment of the United States, in the 1680s when the Spanish began to travel regularly into Texas and western Louisiana; they followed already existing American Indian trails. The Spanish used these paths to reach established missions and presidios. Later armies and immigrants followed these routes, which led to Euro-American settlements across two states. Many of these roads continued to be used and became part of the modern highway systems. In many places, the Spanish names for the roads and landscape are still in use.

The exhibit is sponsored by Mitchell Historic Properties, Repsol, BBVA- Compass Bank and the Fundación Rafael del Pino. Also supporting the event are Galveston Historical Foundation, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association, Daughters of the American Revolution, Stephen F. Austin State University Professor Christopher Talbot and the Consulate General of Mexico.

For more information about the exhibit, contact: consulatespain@comcast.net. The exhibit was brought to Galveston by Mitchell Historic Properties (MHP).
Jewelry, ghosts and pirates are coming to historic downtown Galveston. The Jewel Garden, and two new attractions - Haunted Mayfield Manor and Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast - are leasing newly renovated space from Mitchell Historic Properties in the historic Strand District.

The Jewel Garden, 2326 Strand, opened in July and is owned by the Yeatman family. As the name reflects, the store offers a broad range of jewelry including sterling silver with amber and turquoise accents, rhodium jewelry by several designers, Angie Olami “roman glass” jewelry, and Desert Heart handmade jewelry from Alpine, TX. Rhodium jewelry is a popular choice for shoppers because it is nickel and lead-free, hypoallergenic and doesn’t tarnish. The shop is the exclusive retailer for Ayala Bar, which is designed by an Israeli artist who uses vintage fabrics and Swarovski crystals for this handmade jewelry. The Jewel Garden is also one of only seven stores in Texas to carry Holly Yashi jewelry from California. In addition to jewelry, The Jewel Garden offers an array of gift items and décor such as metal wall art, Cloisonné ornaments, pet-themed planters and unique wine caddies. The Yeatmans also operate Santa Fe Trails, 2311 Strand, which specializes in Native American and Southwest jewelry and art.

Joyce McLean, owner of Head to Footsies, 2211 Strand, is opening Haunted Mayfield Manor in late August in the Butterowe Building, adjacent to Saengerfest Park (23rd and Strand). This fourteen-room haunted mansion is themed around the fictional Dr. Mayfield who supervised the operation of one of the morgues following the 1900 Storm. While the character is fictional, thousands of bodies were stored for identification in various downtown buildings including the 1885 Butterowe Building. McLean describes the experience as a “psychological haunt that involves the lost bride of Dr. Mayfield portrayed by actors, mechanical props and pneumatic animations.” The cost for regular admission will be $10. When Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast opens in early October, a combination ticket will be offered for both attractions for $16.99.

Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast will be a pirate-themed attraction featuring the deck of a pirate ship and captain’s cabin with a focus on the notorious Jean Lafitte and his brother Pierre, as well as Jane Young. Young is known as “The Mother of Texas” and was a resident of Bolivar Peninsula while Lafitte occupied Galveston. “Visitors will explore the myths and legends of these icons of history in a fact-based interactive fun experience,” says McLean. After Lafitte was ejected from Louisiana, he made Galveston his base of operations from 1817 to 1821. He allegedly built a bright red mansion called the “Maison Rouge,” which could be seen from miles out at sea. Lafitte burned the Maison Rouge and his entire Campeche encampment when he was ordered to vacate island by the United States Navy. The attractions will offer a gift shop with pirate and ghost themed books, costumes, toys and games as well as paranormal equipment. Pirates! will be located next door the Haunted Manor.

“These new family friendly attractions are a perfect fit to downtown Galveston,” says Bill Ross, senior vice-president and general manager of Mitchell Historic Properties. “These activities will enhance the downtown Galveston experience and complement the existing retail and dining options.”

Delinda and Chuck Sanchelli, the owners of Galveston’s Nestle Toll House Café by Chip, first signed their lease six days before Hurricane Ike struck the island on Sept. 13, 2008. Despite this foreboding start, they decided to rise to the challenge of opening their doors in the wake of recovery. Nestle Toll House Café opened one year after Ike ravaged Galveston.

Today, visitors of the Nestle Toll House Café are warmly welcomed with a smile and the scent of freshly baked cookies. The café offers a wide variety of food not often found in niche restaurants. While Nestle is known for their cookies and cookie cakes, visitors to Galveston may be surprised by the varieties of sandwiches, wraps, breakfast items, smoothies and coffee drinks available. They also serve Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream.

The café not only offers specials during the usual holidays, but also during special community events such as ArtWalk and Dickens on The Strand. “It’s important for us as a business to participate in community activities,” says Delinda. Nestle was a sponsor for the Sunshine Kids fundraiser and has supported the Ronald McDonald House charities as well as regularly holding fundraisers for local school and nonprofit organizations.

As shop owners, the Sanchellis can’t say enough about the cooperation of downtown businesses in Galveston. With a small community vibe and network of support, Chuck explains the overall feeling as “the better we do, the better the whole downtown does… we all feel like partners.” The couple also pointed out that downtown Galveston’s speedy recovery and the unique participation of the businesses downtown really inspired them in their own ventures. With the regular tourism to the island and the increase of cruise lines stopping in Galveston, the Sanchellis feel “the potential is here for new businesses.”

Nestle Toll House Café is located at 126 23rd Street, directly across from Saengerfest park. They are open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Spotlight on Downtown Galveston - Profile on Maggie Rita's

Maggie Rita's Mexican Bar & Grill, 111 23rd Street, is a recently opened Mexican restaurant in downtown Galveston. Co-founders Santiago Moreno and popular comedian Carlos Mencia opened Maggie Rita's in hopes of establishing their restaurant in places where a unique dining experience would benefit not only themselves but also the community. The first Maggie Rita's was established in New Orleans after the devastation of hurricane Katrina with the hope of bringing tourism and commerce back to the city. They opened the Galveston restaurant with the same goals in August of 2010 during the ongoing recovery from hurricane Ike.

Maggie Rita’s offers a relaxed, fun atmosphere, good food and great margaritas. Serving Tex-Mex and Mexican food with a full service bar, this modern Mexican food restaurant is unique to downtown because they are open late and provide a fun atmosphere without being cliché. The restaurant plays a mix of Top 40, 70s and 80s pop music instead of the Mariachi music heard in most Mexican restaurants. Wednesdays are date night at Maggie Rita’s with a 2 for 1 enchilada dinner special and they have happy hour on weekdays from 4pm to 7pm. The restaurant is open daily except Tuesdays from 11am to 9pm. The restaurant also offers outstanding views of downtown Galveston, the historic Strand and Galveston harbor. With three floors to the restaurant, all with outdoor patios, visitors to Maggie Rita’s are sure to find a unique view of Galveston.

When asked about his experience in downtown Galveston so far, co-owner Santiago Moreno said he was surprised at how business friendly historic downtown Galveston is. “As a business owner, you worry about moving into a historic area because of the regulations they can place upon you. But Galveston’s regulations are all very reasonable and clear,” says Moreno. On a more personal level, Moreno said he is really pleased with his decision to move to Galveston. He and his wife took their honeymoon on the island and 34 years later, he’s back. He said his children and grandchildren love visiting him because the island has so much to offer, especially downtown. While his wife likes shopping in the downtown boutiques, some of Moreno’s favorite downtown destinations are Nestle Toll House Café, Yaga’s Café and Bar, and LaKing’s Confectionery.

Maggie Rita’s is located in the three-story Armour & Co. Building which is part of Mitchell Historic Properties. The building dates to 1912 and offers indoor and outdoor dining with views of The Strand or Galveston’s historic harbor. The restaurant is adjacent to Saengerfest Park. “I love my trade because I’m preserving history,” says Hunt. “To think that this building survived the 1900 Storm, Hurricane Ike and other disasters is just amazing.”

According to “Galveston’s Architecture Guidebook,” the Hutchings-Sealy Building was built by John H. Hutchings and George Sealy for their Ball, Hutchings & Co. which was later reorganized as Hutchings, Sealy & Co. The building actually consists of two adjoining structures made to look like one. The corner building with “Hutchings” housed a bank while the adjoining “Sealy” building was built to house the Sealy offices. The buildings’ terra-cotta-encased steel frame was one of the earliest examples of steel framed construction in Texas.

The Hutchings-Sealy Building is now home to Luigi’s Ristorante Italiano, Karen’s Kloset and Tina’s Gifts & Clothing, as well as offices on the upper floors. The building features a wrought iron and marble antique staircase from the ground floor to the third floor as well as a glass enclosed elevator with views of the common area atrium. The second floor of the building includes a glass block floor extending from the front to the rear of the common area.

“These buildings are a critical part of Galveston’s history and we’re fortunate that the Mitchell family continues to renovate and maintain these unique structures,” says Bill Ross, senior vice president and general manager of Mitchell Historic Properties. “These historic buildings contribute to the character of Galveston’s vibrant downtown and we’re lucky to have them.”

Five years ago, the state legislature declared Yaga’s Wild Game Cook-off as the Official Wild Game Cook-off of the State of Texas.

All proceeds benefit various children’s charities of Galveston County. The 2009 event raised $98,650 for 22 charities including Gulf Coast Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Advocacy Center for Children, Ronald McDonald House, Galveston National Adoption Day, and many others.

The two-day, family-oriented event kicks off Friday evening with the Sponsor Party from 7 p.m. to midnight. Festivities include a fajita buffet, free flowing beer, a huge silent auction and a chance to preview the chefs at work. Tickets for the Sponsor Party are $75 and are available at the gate.

On Saturday, festival-goers of all ages can stroll through rows of smoking pits competing in five cooking divisions from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. First through fifth place finishes will be awarded in each division along with a trophy for the team with best showmanship. Cook-off attendees can eat, relax and enjoy great live music throughout the day. Guests can purchase BBQ dinners for $8 prepared by the Lighthouse Cooking Team. Saturday’s cook-off is family friendly offering a giant, free “Kids Area” featuring moon walks, face painters, pony rides and a variety of other activities. The Kids Area opens at noon.

New this year is a Yaga’s Wild Game 5K run/walk at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday from 28th and Seawall to 10th and Seawall and back. The entry fee is $25 and participants receive an event t-shirt and BBQ dinner coupon. Information on the run will be posted on the event website.
