Galveston County Historical Museum Requests Donations for Hotel Galvez New Hall of History

The Galveston County Historical Museum today announced its collaboration with Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham Grand® Hotel, to create a new historical exhibit in honor of hotel’s centennial celebration. The museum is looking for one-of-a-kind items related to Hotel Galvez to be donated to exhibit; donated items will become part of the permanent collection.

Comedian Carlos Mencia in Galveston for Grand Opening of His New Restaurant Maggie Rita’s

Restaurant patrons have the opportunity to meet comedian Carlos Mencia during the Grand Opening of his new restaurant Maggie Rita’s Mexican Grill & Bar, 111 23rd Street, in Galveston on July 29-July 31. This is the first celebrity owned restaurant to open in Galveston and is the only Mexican eatery located in The Strand National Historic Landmark District. Actor/Comedian Carlos Mencia is known for his Mind of Mencia comedy series on Comedy Central.

Downtown Galveston to Host New Shrimp Festival September 25

Who doesn’t love a good bowl of gumbo? Visitors can sample gumbo from professional cooking teams as part of the inaugural Galveston Island Shrimp Festival. Shrimp Festival activities begin on Friday, Sept. 24 and continue through Sunday, Sept. 26. Events include a 5K run/walk, gumbo cook off, children’s parade, merchant walkabout and bicycle ride followed by a tailgate party. Gumbo lovers can sample and judge wild shrimp gumbo prepared by area restaurants participating in the professional category.

Galveston’s Rosenberg Library to Present Images from 1900 Storm

Rosenberg Library will present The Great Storm: Original Photographs from the Devastating Hurricane of September 8, 1900 at The Tremont House, 2300 Ship’s Mechanic Row, on Saturday, Aug. 28 from 6 – 9 pm in conjunction with ArtWalk. The Great Storm presents 102 images during a 15-minute PowerPoint from the Rosenberg Library’s extensive photographic archives of the hurricane.

Galveston Hotel – The Tremont House Announces New Hotel Manager

Mitchell Historic Properties recently announced the appointment of Marty Miles as hotel manager for The Tremont House, a Wyndham Grand® Hotel, and Harbor House Hotel & Marina. Miles has served as the complex food & beverage director since November 2009 and will continue to serve in this role overseeing the food and beverage operations of Hotel Galvez & Spa, The Tremont House and Harbor House Hotel & Marina.

Galveston Hotel – Hotel Galvez Now Offering In-House Transportation and Excursion Services

Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham Grand® Hotel, today announced it now offers in-house transportation and excursion services to its guests through Galveston Charter Boats and sister company Galveston Shuttle Bus. Transportation and excursion staff is available at the hotel to assist guests with powerboat and sailboat rentals, fishing excursions and other water activities, as well as private and group transportation, Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Galveston’s ‘Haunted’ Hotel Galvez Offers Ghost Tour and Dinner Package on Thursdays in October

Hotel Galvez & Spa, a Wyndham Grand ®Hotel, is now extending its weekly ghost tour, typically reserved for guests, to the public as part of a dinner buffet package. Beginning on Thursday, Oct. 7 and continuing through Thursday, Oct, 28, guests can enjoy dinner followed by a one-hour ghost tour of the historic hotel.

Ship Builders to Transport Hurricane Ike Oak for Brig Galveztown Replica Project to Galveston’s Sister City Malaga

Live oak timber remaining from the thousands of trees cut down from Hurricane Ike will be used for the Brig Galveztown Replica Project in Galveston’s new Sister City, Malaga, Spain. Galveston’s namesake, Bernardo de Galvez was a native of Malaga. This week, the timber was loaded into containers to send to Spain.

Galveston Hotel – Hotel Galvez Celebrates 99th Anniversary June 10

Galveston’s Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham® Grand Hotel and a National Trust Historic Hotel of America, will celebrate its 99th anniversary on Thursday, June 10, by serving complimentary cake to anyone dining in Bernardo’s Restaurant for lunch and dinner. The hotel also invites guests to record birthday wishes and favorite memories of Hotel Galvez on video from noon to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the hotel’s concierge desk. These video memories will be posted on the hotel’s YouTube Channel.
