Hotel Galvez & Spa: Galveston County Historical Museum Requests Donations for Hotel Galvez New Hall of History

The Galveston County Historical Museum today announced its collaboration with Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham Grand® Hotel, to create a new historical exhibit in honor of hotel’s centennial celebration. The museum is looking for one-of-a-kind items related to Hotel Galvez to be donated to exhibit; donated items will become part of the permanent collection.

The new Hall of History will be located in the lower level of the hotel and is expected to be unveiled to the public in January 2011. The Hall of History will include framed panels about the history of the hotel as well as various items exhibited in two display cases purchased from the original Eiband’s Department Store, which was formerly located at 2205 Post Office in Galveston.

“Our museum collects anything related to Galveston County history and at this time we are focusing efforts on getting new donations of materials related to Hotel Galvez,” says Galveston County Historical Museum Director Jodi Wright-Gidley. “We are looking for unique items such as personal photographs, china or other collectible items that may have been original to the hotel but lost over the years.”

Those interested in donating items should contact the museum by calling (409) 766-2340 or emailing Curator Jennifer Marines at jennifer.marines@co.galveston.tx.us. Donated items are tax deductible.

Hotel Galvez opened on June 10, 1911 at 6 p.m. and still stands as a symbol of Galveston Island’s resilience in the face of disaster following the Great Storm of 1900. This elegant beachfront hotel was immediately proclaimed the “Queen of the Gulf” and within one year of opening it was deemed the “best arranged and most richly furnished seaside hotel in America” by Hotel Monthly.

When Hotel Galvez opened in 1911, Galveston had finished building its 17-foot seawall to protect the island and had completed its grade-raising project, which raised the grade of land to make the town and its buildings less susceptible to future flooding. The Causeway had been completed, connecting Galveston Island to mainland Texas. These major accomplishments were part of the island’s recovery following the Great Storm of 1900.

In preparation for the hotel’s 100th anniversary in 2011, hotel owners George Mitchell and the Mitchell family are replacing the Gulf facing windows with operable, divided light windows reminiscent of the hotel’s original design. The guest rooms are being outfitted with new décor, including new furniture, bedding, drapes and flat screen televisions. Beginning in December 2010, the hotel will host monthly events and activities in celebration of its 100th anniversary, including the unveiling of the Hall of History in January.

Hotel Galvez, A Wyndham Grand® Hotel and a National Trust Historic Hotel of America, remains the only historic beachfront hotel in Galveston. Hotel Galvez is rated four diamonds by AAA and is part of Mitchell Historic Properties.

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, LLC, and its affiliates, subsidiaries of Wyndham Worldwide Corporation (NYSE: WYN), offer upscale hotel and resort accommodations throughout the United States, Europe, China, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. All hotels are either franchised or managed by the company or managed through a joint venture partner.

The Tremont House: Galveston’s Rosenberg Library to Present Images from 1900 Storm

Rosenberg Library will present The Great Storm: Original Photographs from the Devastating Hurricane of September 8, 1900 at The Tremont House, 2300 Ship’s Mechanic Row, on Saturday, Aug. 28 from 6 – 9 pm in conjunction with ArtWalk. The Great Storm presents 102 images during a 15-minute PowerPoint from the Rosenberg Library’s extensive photographic archives of the hurricane. The images include panoramic views of ruin, street scenes, and photographs of survivors and relief workers.

“Several images of the twin spires of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, which was destroyed in the cataclysm, are perhaps the most haunting, iconic reminders of this disaster,” says Head of Special Collections Casey Greene.

The 1900 Storm is the nation’s deadliest recorded natural disaster. It claimed upwards of 8,000 lives on Galveston Island and several thousand more on the mainland. A storm surge of almost 16 feet covered every part of Galveston.

Library staff will sell reproductions of historic color postcards from the Forshey Collection. In 2009, Rocky and Sherrie Forshey donated over 700 postcards of Galveston, circa 1898-1930, to the Rosenberg Library. The reproductions illustrate postcards depicting such topics as beach scenes, the Seawall, Hotel Galvez, and other Galveston landmarks.

Rosenberg Library, located at 23rd and Sealy, suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Ike. The library is currently undergoing a major renovation. To make donations toward the renovations visit www.Rosenberg-Library.org or call (409) 763-8854.

Hotel Galvez & Spa: Ship Builders to Transport Hurricane Ike Oak for Brig Galveztown Replica Project to Galveston’s Sister City Malaga

Live oak timber remaining from the thousands of trees cut down from Hurricane Ike will be used for the Brig Galveztown Replica Project in Galveston’s new Sister City, Malaga, Spain. Galveston’s namesake, Bernardo de Galvez was a native of Malaga. This week, the timber was loaded into containers to send to Spain.

Malaga, Spain, began planning for the Brig Galveztown Replica Project more than ten years ago when Spain and the City of Malaga launched an effort to educate Malagans, Spaniards and Americans on the historic significance of Bernardo de Galvez, a native of Malaga, and his role during the American Revolution.

The plan is for Galveztown’s hull to be completed in late 2010, launched and rigged in early 2011. She will sail across the US Gulf Coast including Galveston and St. Augustine and the Atlantic and visit ports in Florida. The vessel will serve as a floating museum on the contributions by Bernardo de Galvez to the American Revolution as well as 18th century navigation, dress, arms and life at sea. As part of Hotel Galvez’ year-long centennial celebration in 2011, Galveztown will make a stop in Galveston.

Astilleros Nereo, a traditional wooden boat and shipyard in Malaga that is designated as a living museum is one of the last yards in Spain that still has the capacity to build large ships out of wood. The owners of the yard, the Sanchez-Guitard family decided that they could contribute to the Galvez research and education effort by building a full-scale replica of Galvez’ brig the Galveztown while showcasing traditional ship building as part of their ongoing programs as a living museum.

Partners for this project include Asteilleros Neros, City of Malaga in Spain, Spanish Red Cross, Nyhael Consulting, University of Malaga, Astilleros Bermeo, Escuela Tecnica Superior de Ingenieros Navales de Madrid, City of Aviles in Spain, Daughters of American Revolution, United States Embassy in Spain, Abyssal Pictures, and Fundacion Nao Victoria.
Galveston’s Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham® Grand Hotel and a National Trust Historic Hotel of America, will celebrate its 99th anniversary on Thursday, June 10, by serving complimentary cake to anyone dining in Bernardo’s Restaurant for lunch and dinner. The hotel also invites guests to record birthday wishes and favorite memories of Hotel Galvez on video from noon to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the hotel’s concierge desk. These video memories will be posted on the hotel’s YouTube Channel.

The Hotel Galvez was built as a symbol of Galveston’s resilience following the Great Storm of 1900. A group of businessmen pooled their resources and raised $1 million to open the hotel on June 10, 1911 at 6 p.m. This elegant beachfront hotel was immediately proclaimed the “Queen of the Gulf.”

The hotel has a colorful history, serving as a temporary White House for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as a working facility for the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and as a headquarters for the Pageants of Pulchritude, the beauty pageants that preceded the Miss Universe Pageant. The Hotel Galvez is now one of the most popular wedding venue choices for brides in Texas, hosting an average of 120 weddings every year.

In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt spent ten days at the hotel, where he held a meeting with newly-elected Congressman and future President Lyndon B. Johnson. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was also a hotel guest in later years. In the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, the Hotel Galvez was the social hub of Galveston, then known as the “Playground of the Southwest.” Bandleader Phil Harris and actress Alice Faye married at Hotel Galvez and numerous celebrities, including Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Stewart, stayed at the hotel.

In preparation for the hotel’s 100th anniversary in 2011, hotel owners George Mitchell and the Mitchell family plan to replace the building’s Gulf-facing windows with operable, divided light windows reminiscent of the hotel’s original design. Guest rooms will be outfitted with new décor, including new furniture, bedding, drapes and flat screen televisions. This renovation is currently underway and room refurbishments have been completed on the second, sixth, seventh and eight floors.

This December, the hotel will release a commemorative book entitled The Hotel Galvez: Queen of the Gulf, by Gary Cartwright, who also authored Galveston: A History of the Island. This new book includes a foreword by Peter H. Brink, former executive director of the Galveston Historical Foundation, and new color photography by nationally-known architectural photographer Carol Highsmith. Beginning in December 2010, the hotel will host monthly events and activities in celebration of its 100th anniversary, including a Spanish cultural evening celebrating Galveston’s namesake, Bernardo de Galvez, a mass wedding vow renewal, outdoor concerts and fireworks.

Hotel Galvez remains the only historic beachfront hotel in Galveston. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Hotel Galvez is rated four diamonds by AAA and is owned by Galveston preservationists George Mitchell. The hotel is part of Mitchell Historic Properties. Over the years, he has worked on restoration projects at the Alamo and various missions in San Antonio as well as historic courthouses across Texas, including Goliad, DeWitt, Nueces County and Bexar County. “I love my trade because I’m preserving history,” says Hunt. “To think that this building survived the 1900 Storm, Hurricane Ike and other disasters is just amazing.”

According to “Galveston’s Architecture Guidebook,” the Hutchings-Sealy Building was built by John H. Hutchings and George Sealy for their Ball, Hutchings & Co. which was later reorganized as Hutchings, Sealy & Co. The building actually consists of two adjoining structures made to look like one. The corner building with “Hutchings” housed a bank while the adjoining “Sealy” building was built to house the Sealy offices. The buildings’ terra-cotta-encased steel frame was one of the earliest examples of steel framed construction in Texas.

The Hutchings-Sealy Building is now home to Luigi’s Ristorante Italiano, Karen’s Kloset and Tina’s Gifts & Clothing, as well as offices on the upper floors. The building features a wrought iron and marble antique staircase from the ground floor to the third floor as well as a glass enclosed elevator with views of the common area atrium. The second floor of the building includes a glass block floor extending from the front to the rear of the common area.

“These buildings are a critical part of Galveston’s history and we’re fortunate that the Mitchell family continues to renovate and maintain these unique structures,” says Bill Ross, senior vice president and general manager of Mitchell Historic Properties. “These historic buildings contribute to the character of Galveston’s vibrant downtown and we’re lucky to have them.”

Hotel Galvez & Spa: Texas’s Only Historic Beachfront Hotel to Celebrate 100 Years in 2011

Texas’s only historic beachfront hotel - Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham Grand Hotel - is an integral part of Galveston’s history and a symbol of the community’s resilience.

When Hotel Galvez opened in 1911, Galveston had just finished building its 17-foot Seawall to protect the Island and its grade raising project which raised the grade of land as well as hundreds of buildings from their original level to make them less susceptible to flooding in the event of future storms. The Causeway had been completed, now connecting Galveston Island to the mainland. All of these accomplishments were part of the Island’s recovery following the Great Storm of 1900. The 1900 Storm was the worst natural disaster in United States history to that point in time. An estimated 6,000 to as many as 8,000 people died and 3,600 structures were destroyed including the entire wharf front.

A group of businessmen pooled their resources and raised $1 million to build Hotel Galvez and the hotel opened on June 10, 1911 at 6 p.m. Hotel Galvez still stands as a symbol of Galveston Island’s resilience in the face of disaster. This elegant beachfront hotel was immediately proclaimed “Queen of the Gulf” and within a year of opening, it was deemed the “best arranged and most richly furnished seaside hotel in America” by Hotel Monthly.

This elegant hotel has been the choice of numerous famous guests including Howard Hughes, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. It served as a temporary White House for the staff of President Franklin D. Roosevelt during a 10-day offshore fishing trip and was the site for his first meeting with newly elected Congressman and future president Lyndon B. Johnson. A reception in honor of war hero and future president Dwight D. Eisenhower was also held at the hotel.

In the early 1920s, families all across the country began flocking to Galveston’s original beachfront hotel. “Moving in” to Hotel Galvez for the summer was a common trend among wealthy families, many of whom spent from six weeks to six months in the hotel, paying a mere two dollars a day for luxurious accommodations. The hotel provided such amenities as a barbershop, laundry, writing room, and tailor as well as easy access to the bathhouses and entertainment along the beachfront.

Between 1920 and 1932 Hotel Galvez served as headquarters for the Pageants of Pulchritude, the beauty pageants that were predecessors to the Miss America Pageant. The hotel was also the venue for many debutante balls, as well as social activities for the University of Texas Medical School fraternities throughout the 20s, 30s and 40s. Over the years, various entertainers who performed at the famed Balinese Room were frequent guests of the hotel.

The hotel functioned as a working facility for the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and in 1944 the hotel was awarded an “honorable discharge” from its duties. During the years, the hotel was owned and operated by several individuals and companies. In 1993, it was purchased by its current owners who launched a $20 million restoration to reflect its 1911 origin.

In preparation for the hotel’s 100th anniversary in 2011, hotel owners George Mitchell and the Mitchell family plan to replace the Gulf facing windows with operable, divided light windows reminiscent of the hotel’s original design as well as to update the guest rooms with a new décor including new furniture, bedding, drapes and flat screen televisions.

This December, the hotel is releasing a commemorative book entitled The Hotel Galvez: Queen of the Gulf, by Gary Cartwright, author also of Galveston: A History of the Island. The new book includes a foreword by Peter H. Brink, former executive director of the Galveston Historical Foundation, and new color photography by the nationally known architectural photographer Carol Highsmith.

The Hotel Galvez, A Wyndham® Historic Hotel and a National Trust Historic Hotel of America, remains the only historic beachfront hotel in Galveston. The Hotel Galvez is rated four diamonds by AAA and is part of Mitchell Historic Properties.

Hotel Galvez & Spa, A Wyndham Grand Hotel, has unveiled its beautifully appointed new second floor guest rooms. In preparation for the hotel’s 100th anniversary in 2011, hotel owners George Mitchell and the Mitchell family are updating all guest rooms with a new décor.

Second floor rooms now feature a soothing neutral palette, plush carpeting by Constantine, Atlas and Masland, Bernhardt fine furniture, Simmons® HealthSmart™ mattresses, 37-inch Samsung flat screen televisions, Stacy Garcia duvet covers, custom headboards, new window treatments and updated lighting. As part of the new décor, all rooms feature nature-inspired aluminum prints by Kayla Mitchell, granddaughter of George Mitchell. The hotel is also replacing its Gulf facing windows with new divided light windows reminiscent of the hotel’s original design.

Last year, the sixth floor rooms were converted to spa-inspired rooms featuring rain showers, Simmons HealthSmart mattresses, Anichini bedding manufactured in Italy, 42-inch flat screen televisions and luxurious amenities including spa robe and slippers, books and iPod® iHome players. These sixth floor features allergen-friendly Wyndham ClearAir sm rooms, which have undergone a multistep cleaning process designed to remove up to 98 percent of allergens using medical-grade air purification systems designed by New York-based Pure Solutions NA.

Suites on the seventh and eighth floors were updated last year with new décor and furniture, including the addition of plantation shutters. Suite windows are being converted to custom divided light windows. Throughout the year, the hotel also will renovate its third, fourth and fifth floors in time for the anniversary in 2011.

Hotel Galvez will launch a year-long celebration commemorating its 100 years of operation with a New Year’s Eve Ball on Dec. 31, 2010. Monthly events include unveiling a new Hall of History, a group wedding vow renewal event, a bathing beauty revue and classic movie shown on the hotel’s lawn.

During the centennial anniversary weekend in June, the hotel plans to host a day of concerts on the lawn followed by a fireworks display over the Gulf of Mexico. The hotel will commemorate the birthday of the hotel’s namesake, Bernardo de Gálvez, on July 23 with a Spanish-themed wine dinner. Events will continue throughout the fall. A full calendar of events will be posted at www.hotelgalvez100.com.

When Hotel Galvez opened in 1911, Galveston had just finished building its 17-foot Seawall to protect the Island from storm surges, and its grade raising project which raised the grade of land as well as hundreds of buildings from 11 to 14 feet to make them less susceptible to flooding in the event of future storms. The Causeway had been completed, now connecting Galveston Island to the mainland. All of these accomplishments were part of the Island’s recovery following the Great Storm of 1900.

Hotel Galvez, A Wyndham® Grand Hotel and a National Trust Historic Hotel of America, remains the only historic beachfront hotel in Galveston and is rated four diamonds by AAA and is part of Mitchell Historic Properties. Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, LLC and its affiliates, subsidiaries of Wyndham Worldwide Corporation (NYSE: WYN), offer upscale hotel and resort accommodations throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, China and the Caribbean. The café offers the option of ordering a half sandwich and soup, half sandwich and salad or half salad and soup for $9.

Tremont Café has expanded its menu of hearth baked flat bread pizzas to include pear and gorgonzola, barbeque chicken, Thai chicken, wild mushroom, vegetarian with Japanese eggplant, goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes or the option to create your own pizza. The restaurant will continue to offer its award-winning chicken pot pie and 8 layer Tuscan lasagna and Portobello Rockefeller.

The new “After 5” menu offers cedar plank salmon, brick chicken, bacon wrapped barbeque shrimp, Florentine chicken calzone and shrimp scampi.

The Tremont House’ first Mardi Gras Ball hosted by Cynthia and George Mitchell was held on Feb. 16, 1985 with the revival of the city’s celebration of Mardi Gras in Galveston. In 1985, ball goers were entertained by live performances by the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, Russell Jackson and Brennan’s Bunch and the legendary jazz clarinetist Pete Fountain. Ball goers also watched the first Knights of Momus Grand Night Parade as it passed in front of the hotel in grand style. The first mile-long parade was a “Salute to the Age of Mythology” and drew an estimated 75,000 people.

The hotel invites the public to see its collection of Mardi Gras Ball invitations dating back to 1985 during a special exhibit held in conjunction with ArtWalk on Saturday, Jan. 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit is called The Tremont House Celebrates Mardi Gras - 26 years of Celebration through Invitations and Doubloons. Every year, the George Mitchell family produces a custom invitation and accompanying doubloon to celebrate the hotel’s annual celebration of Mardi Gras.

The Tremont House Annual Mardi Gras Ball and Parade Viewing Party provides one of the best vantage points to watch the Momus Grand Night Parade. Over the years, the hotel has celebrated Mardi Gras with various themes including its salute to Hollywood, Texas, the Roaring 20’s, Broadway, and Circus as well as Parisian Nights, Venetian Nights, Cosmic Carnival, Carnaval de Brazil, Viva Espana, and Viva La Noche just to name a few.

This year, The Tremont House, a Wyndham Grand Hotel, celebrates “A Chinese New Year” at the 26th Annual Mardi Gras Ball and Parade Viewing Party on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010.
