Mardi Gras Ball to Feature Asian Dishes and Special Packages in Honor of Chinese New Year

Tremont House guests can celebrate the Chinese New Year with a Mardi Gras flair during the 26th Annual Mardi Gras Ball “A Chinese New Year” on Saturday, Feb. 13. The Tremont House, A Wyndham Grand Hotel, will feature an array of Asian inspired dishes as part of this year’s themed celebration.
 
Executive Chef Jerry Helminski and Executive Sous Chef Charles Terry are preparing Char Su Spare Ribs, steamed cabbage rolls, sesame shrimp toast (fried shrimp with shrimp paste) and pot stickers (assorted Dim Sum and pot stickers with soy dipping sauce). Salad entrees include Chinese long bean salad, Asian noodle salad, Shanghai slaw (shredded bok choy with roasted sesame vinaigrette) and marinated bean sprout salad served Beijing style with shredded pork.
 
Additionally, the staff is serving Chinese fried rice, vegetable chop suey, sweet & sour bean curd, “eight jewel” vegetables, hot & sour soup, steamed scallops with a ginger sauce, spicy peanut chicken and steamed red snapper with black bean sauce and ginger. The highlight of the menu is the Roast Imperial Peking duck, a shredded roast duck with julienne cucumber and scallion, hoisin sauce and Chinese pancakes.
 
The menu doesn’t end there. Guests can enjoy Cherries in Snow (sweet milk treat with ruby read cherries, Peking Dust (chestnut powder over whipped cream), almond cookies, lychee mousse, flourless ginger-chocolate cake and tempura- style Bananas Foster.
 
The ball begins at 6 p.m. and tickets are $350 per couple which includes an open bar, extensive buffet, live music by The Brew from Austin in the lobby and the renowned Dr. Michael White Jazz Quartet in the dining area. Guests will also enjoy prime viewing of the Momus Grand Night Parade as floats and marching bands stop directly in front of the hotel to perform. After the parade, attendees will venture to the after-party in the hotel’s ballroom for performances by Chinese cultural dancers Lee’s Golden Dragon Dance Troupe from Houston followed by dancing to the sounds of Eclipse Band and Orchestra. Breakfast will also be served at the conclusion of the evening.
 
A portion of the proceeds from the ball will benefit Rosenberg Library, a direct descendant of Texas’ first public library, which is still recovering from damage sustained from Hurricane Ike. The Tremont House is offering a two-night package that includes accommodations, two tickets to the ball on Saturday, Feb l3, 2010 and parade viewing of the Momus Grand Night Parade. The package price is for Feb. 12-14, 2010 and starts at $1,000.
 
The annual ball, hosted by the George Mitchell family, originated in 1985 with the grand opening of The Tremont House and the revival of Galveston Island’s city-wide Mardi Gras celebrations.
